And Palahniuk’s gift is that he can create real characters and put them in fantastic, outlandish, disturbing stories, yet you still believe in the people. In fact, the outrageousness of their circumstances can serve to make them more, not less real.
This book has some pretty outrageous circumstances: crazy husband not quite succeeding in offing himself, a wicked grandmother, a would-be artist wife ground down by a fairy tale unraveled, and what amounts to torture spanning generations. In other words, just the sort of thing you’d expect from Chuck.
If you like twisted and aren’t easily grossed out, Palahniuk is your man. His stories are the proverbial accident you can’t look away from, and can’t help thinking about long after you’ve seen.
