This is Norwegian artist Jason’s first (translated into English, anyway, and possibly his first of any kind) graphic novel, but the second of his that I have read.

His “people” are all variations of birds, dogs, and rabbits, but what is important about them is not how they appear, but their humanity as it is revealed in their actions and in the circumstances they create and find themselves in. This book is a series of interconnected stories, starting with the recognizable pleasures of that all-important best buddy childhood friendship. Where it goes from there is where people can go when faced with seemingly senseless tragedy.

Which is to say this slim volume is about the end of childhood, missed connections, the daily grind, and how we cope (or not.) I like Jason’s stuff because it supports multiple readings, and stays away from easy answers. You finish it for the first time and feel it, and know what it is about, and yet you want to read it again because you want to know what it is about. Highly recommended.
