This nearly wordless interrelated collection of stories has an odd appeal. It was at times heartbreaking, funny, playful, and always a little strange. Part of the strangeness comes from the visual style — the faces of each character are oddly proportioned and more or less immobile, with pupil-less eyes. Not to mention the main character is a blackbird with arms instead of wings wearing a hat and jacket without pants, and another is a very solid skeleton. That the stories are built around a straighforward six panel to a page layout (with some subtle changes, bleeding some in black to the edge of the page, slightly rounding panel corners in other places) makes the drawing seem more, not less, off-kilter.

I’ve read good things about Jason’s first book, Hey, Wait… and now that I’ve read some of his work, I’ll look for more of it.
