This Alternative Comics collection includes the work of two dozen different artists. I think the anthology format is particularly good for newcomers to comics: it is a great way to see the work of many different artists at once, and to compare different styles.
Things in this volume that stood out for me were: the two versions of the same story (”Paper Cute”) by James Kochalka; Sara Varon’s “Winter”; the idea of Renee French’s portrait; and Tobias Schalken’s experiment with separate visual and textual narrative in “Standing Right Here Looking 1000 Miles Away.”
The blurbs about each artist were worth reading as well. Some were used to explain something about the comic appearing in the collection, others gave an abbreviated version of resumes, and other pointed to websites where the reader could find more information.
If you are interested in contemporary alternative comics, you should take a look at this book.
