Cave-In

October 9th, 2002

by Brian Ralph

ISBN: 0966536339

This book creates a complete, quirky world of possibility and that is one of things I love about comics: their ability to quickly and totally absorb you in the reality they create.

Ralph creates a wordless but nonetheless involving story. Subtle shifts in ink colors span this small rectangular volume. The drawings are full of energy and detail without being fussy. The book opens and closes with a cute rodent and in between there is exploring, being swallowed alive, escape, unexpected tenderness, rescue, loss and return. What more could you ask of a novel, graphic or otherwise?

This book is the kind of thing you can pick up and read again, and the sense of wonder in it holds up: another thing I love about comics. Spend five minutes or spend an hour, and be charmed.
