The Sweetest Machine

I’m writing this on my brand new PowerBook. I thought I could hold out for the release of Tiger, but actually having the funds available (thank you electronically deposited income tax refund) was more temptation than I could bear.

Grabbing files from the first laptop was a snap: just plugged in the firewire cable, restarted the old machine and sucked over everything I wanted, apps, files, preferences. Now Lisa and I can both be online at once. Two computers, no waiting!

So far I’m liking the feel of the keyboard, and I’m surprised at how smart the backlighting system is. Yes, of course I turned off and on (and off, and on) the lights in the room to better enjoy the entrancing glow. Like there are any macheads among you who wouldn’t. Lisa politely watched this one time, and even feigned interest. Then she went into the bathroom and warned the kitten that she had been supplanted in my affections.

Which is a filthy lie. The cat was never competing with the laptop. She’s my favorite pet, and this is my favorite machine.

Tell the truth. I told the kitten WE had BOTH been supplanted–following this formula, I suppose that makes me the “favorite wife”. Yergh. I dunno how the fur person feels, but I think my assertion that we had been replaced was somehow less insulting…

Yay! That new PowerBook must be amazing, Congrats! I’ve been looking into getting an iPod photo, I am excited it has a color screen… but I will hold off until my official hire date kicks in!

[...] Is nothing sacred? I wouldn’t want The Accidental Rifle to be used by Fedex, or this birthday wish appropriated by Hallmark. I love my PowerBook, but the stories I tell about it aren’t for Apple (or Microsoft or Lenovo). I don’t want, or need, to make a buck off every single thing I do. Some of the advisors to this train wreck in progress surprise me: Ross Mayfield (Mr Wiki) and Zeldman (Mr Web Standards). Guys, just because you can build something doesn’t mean you should. In principle, how different is this idea from the blog posts for hire scheme? Not very. [...]
