“Do not hesitate. Show no mercy”:
A Tale of Friday Night Geekery

I see that the Star Wars trailer, for Revenge of the Sith, is available as a torrent file.

I decide it is time I figure out what the hell a torrent file is.

I download the client, then grab the .torrent file.

Instead of swooshing lightsabers and explosions in space, all I see is a nasty Quicktime error message — Quicktime doesn’t have something it needs and that something is not available on the server. My victory in acquiring a 50MB file in record time appears Pyrrhic.

But no, I do what any good geek would do: I get to work on Google. I find out that sometimes there are problems playing .avi files on a Mac, but that the free VLC media player can play .avi files without the dreaded “you are screwed” error message.

Now I have flashing light sabers, space battles, sobbing Natalie Portman, marching stormtroopers, and Vader-breathing all just one instantaneous click away.

God, I love the internet.

I am very excited to see the “final” Star Wars. It is such a pivotal film, linking the new Star Wars with the original Star Wars, quite amazing!
